Church as We Know it Today

Growing up as a preacher kid, also known as a PK, I’ve been in church my entire life. In conversations with my father, other religious leaders, and just things I’ve noticed myself, there seemed to be an issue within the black church. Attendance and membership has declined, and people seem to want to go to church less and less. In addition, the church has seemingly changed over the years, and has gone away from being the center of the community to just a place of religious entertainment. According to a study by the Pew Research Center, 41 percent of people in the church believe they are not doing enough for their community. With this project, I sought to figure out why that was the case. Did it have anything to do with a change of philosophy between generations of religious leaders? Have black churches forgotten about their communities, and are just more concerned with keeping the lights on in the building? This project dives deeper into the issues surrounding the black church, and hopes to provide insight on what the root of the problem may be. It provides history of the black church dating all the way back to the days of slavery, and how the church has changed as seen today.
